Happy Valentine's Day!

This past weekend was a crazy and productive one. Saturday morning, Mike and I headed out to Baby Waves in Independence, Ohio to have our 2nd and last 3D/4D ultrasound done before our baby comes. We didn't realize until we were about half way there just how bad the weather was, and ended up driving out there in the worst snow storm this winter. (It's been a very mild winter here thus far). We were both a little rattled after the hour and 15 minute car ride, but am so glad we made it safe and sound. Our little girl was not very cooperative with getting her picture taken that day, but we managed to get a few beautiful shots of her....

After the ultrasound, we were back on the treacherous roads and headed towards Akron to make a KYEbags dropoff at NOTO. I have meant to get out to the boutique to re-stock since the holidays, but just haven't had the time. So, if you're local and a huge fan of either KYEbags or NOTO, be sure to stop in soon and check out all the new merchandise! I had a chance to browse the store, and boy are there some beautiful clothing selections for Spring!

On Saturday, Mike and I also stopped at Home Depot and finally purchased the shelving I have been needing to finish up my studio/baby room! I am thrilled, because this means I can now get things organized and finished up back there to make space for our baby's things and be able to be more effective in my creativity. It is a whole lot easier to focus on work when you know where things are! Now, if I can just get Mike to install them for me I would be all set! *hint hint*

Valentine's Day is here and it came up fast this year. This time last year, I was basking in the San Diego sun, living it up on an all expense paid weekend trip with my husband. It was one of the best and most memorably romantic times of my life.

Yes, my husband even bought me this diamond flower ring which I will cherish forever!

Man, would I love to do that again! This year Valentine's Day isn't going to be half as glamorous... or maybe any Valentine's Day for a long long time for that matter. But one of the surprising things about becoming a mama soon is that I just don't care. I am thankful that God sent me on that trip when He did, and glad that I have all my photos and memories to look back on it. Maybe one day, it'll happen again... until then I choose to be content, even though we may be simply too broke this year to even have dinner out together. Because I know that some this year, do not have the luxury of being with their loved one at all. And the fact that I do makes me feel especially blessed.

A couple things....

It's official!.... Yesterday I finished up the last of my scheduled custom orders and am now officially on 'maternity leave'. *happy dance* Which basically just means that I am no longer taking custom orders before our baby arrives, but will still be working on all the things I have wanted to catch up on for so long.

I am definitely looking forward to almost 2 whole months (hopefully), of free time to catch up, organize, re-stock the online store and NOTO, and continue preparing for the baby. And taking a day out here and there to sit on my butt and do nothing! It sounds glorious.

Is it Friday yet?...... Today I am taking it SLOOOOWWWWW. Because this pregnancy has me hurting, and I am getting low on some key materials. Soooo, today will be spent working on some small things, like clutches, and getting a much dreaded custom order done. Still though, I have somehow managed to accomplish quite a bit this week for it being only Wednesday! New swag bags are trickling into the shop, so be sure to head over and check those out. I am also working on some super cute new vintage style clutches that will be listed by the end of the week.

This week has been a slow one as far as sales go, which means no income, which means I am low on materials/supplies. Which is a total bummer because I definitely have it in me to get a whole lot more accomplished this week! This week is off to a great start, almost too great for a Monday, but I'll take it! I have already accomplished so much today, and am hoping I can keep up the momentum throughout this week. Today, I finished up 2 new courier bags that I am super excited to show you, and also started working on some swag bags to re-stock the Etsy Shop and NOTO. I am hoping that by the end of the week, I will have plenty of new swag bags done and listed. They are so popular and affordable, they are hard to keep in-stock. Plus, Spring will be here before we know it, and swag bags are so handy in warmer weather.

Aren't they adorable? I think I like them even better than owl bags, and hope that they will be just as popular! I especially love the red and yellow one. I had a ton of fun making them :)

I am also LOVING the new camera Mike and I purchased after Christmas. Isn't the photo quality great? We ended up going with the Nikon Coolpix L120, and I couldn't be happier. The picture quality is excellent for being a bridge camera, although I am not a photographer and still have a lot to learn. My goal one day is to own a Cannon, but for know as a growing step, this camera has not let me down. Anyone looking for a step up camera from a pocket digital should check it out!

Rainy day and no energy...

Today I feel so drained. Literally zapped of every ounce of energy, and lacking all motivation to do ANYTHING (Baby growing will do that to you). I have basically accomplished nothing productive today, took a nap, and am now just feeling lost. And the weather outside is incredibly strange for being the middle of January. It has been 50 degrees all day, dark and very windy, and now it has started to rain quite hard along with the wind and dark... it's eery. I think that the earth is groaning.
Last week, as I mentioned in my last post, did not end up slowing down, not one bit. It did just the opposite, and KYEbags business was just as busy as a holiday week in December. I had 9 orders I think, and pulled quite a few long sewing days. By Friday I was burnt out from sewing, and got an unusual burst of energy to get things done, so I decided to stay in all day and start the back room (studio/baby room) painting project. It was the perfect day for a project, as it was extremely windy and blizzard like, and I couldn't go out anyways.
The project turned into a weekend project, and I just finished up painting the remainder of the trim and touch-ups yesterday afternoon. I got a great start on Friday, working late into the evening and pushing myself too much, as usual. It felt so good to finally accomplish something back there though. The whole ordeal was a BIG chore. The room is packed with stuff, (as you saw in my previous photos), and therefore, I had to work on small sections of the room at a time. Clearing each area first, getting it all painted (ceiling, walls and trim), cleaning up, and moving stuff back to make space to work in the next area. It was a pain, but by Friday evening, I had about 2/3rds of the room complete, and might have had more done if I hadn't run out of paint. I sent Mike to the Sherwin Williams near his work that evening, and he brought more paint home with him so I could at least get the ceiling finished up. The rest we worked on on Saturday afternoon. It was nice to have Mike there to help me out a bit. He mostly sanded and did the prep work to many doors and woodwork, which was awesome, because I hate prep work. And I found out that he is an excellent sander :)
Instead of pink, I decided to go with 'Shagreen' on the walls instead. I am so glad I did. Shagreen is a color I had in our old bedroom/loft in our last apartment, and I will probably always have that color in at least one room of every future place I live in. It's one of my favorites, along with the 'August Moon' color I always paint my bathrooms. Plus, it was a lot easier of a color to tie the whole studio/baby room together. The green will still look striking alongside all of baby's things, and also goes well with my sewing table and style. The white ceiling and woodwork really brighten it up back there and give it a much cleaner look. I am very pleased with how it turned out, and much less stressed now too!
I still have to get the room sorted out and organized, but I do not feel as pressed about that at the moment. I still need to purchase and install shelving on the one wall, so until that happens, I cannot do much 'organizing' anyways. We reversed the layout of the room, so my work station is now set up down by the window, which I think will be a great improvement. I can't wait until I can hang some artwork, get a curtain made and hung, and get everything up off the floor and organized where I can see it all. I know all the changes will not only make me feel a lot better, but also help me focus, be more creative and get a lot more accomplished in a more efficient manner.

All in all, it was a great weekend and very productive. And most importantly, we are getting much closer to being ready for our baby and a stress-free mama! Now... if I can only find all that lost motivation this week, I's be all set. But I think it's just going to one of 'those' weeks, and maybe after the craziness of last week, that's okay. Rest is good, although I am not good at it!

It was a super crazy week here at KYEbags.... as busy as a Christmas sales week, in fact. While I couldn't be happier, I am also one very worn out mama-to-be! Today I will be taking a break from the sewing machine... maybe... and setting my focus on getting the studio/baby room ready for it's paint make-over.

I made a lot of bags this week, although my shop doesn't really reflect it, since they are flying off the racks! This week it was all about the owls... though, when is it not these days?

Well, it's just a few more hours here until Christmas Eve and I think I am finally ready! I feel like I have been totally MIA this past week.... busy with cleaning, gift wrapping, baking and so on. It feels so good to mostly be done and ready to relax and enjoy the season with family and friends!
I have to say, this holiday season I was SO blessed by all my customers! KYEbags shipped out at least 25 orders just in December alone! And that doesn't even include boutique and in-person sales. Although you kept me super busy, I want to say a big THANK YOU! With your help and support, KYEbags was able to pay for most of Mike and I's holiday shopping this year for family and friends, and made it so we didn't have to charge almost anything at all to our credit cards. That is a HUGE blessing to us! I greatly appreciate each and everyone of you.
I know I have been promising some sneak peaks of some fresh new items coming to KYEbags in 2012, but with all the holiday craziness, I just haven't had much time to experiment with new things. I do have some great ideas though, and I can assure you that there will be some new bags being introduced soon! Here is one that I plan on adding to the collection...

Mike took off work for all of next week... so other than a custom order I have scheduled, I will probably not be working much. We don't have any big plans... mostly just staying in, spending time relaxing together and hopefully doing some house prep for the baby!

Holiday craziness!

Things have been a little crazy around here lately. Christmas feels like it is approaching at the speed of lightening, and I am generally feeling unprepared. KYEbags orders have been flying off the racks... which thrills me and has kept me so busy that I have not had any time to restock or get my own Christmas gifts done. I was lucky to not have many last minute custom orders this year, but still, I wish I had had a bit more time to focus on some handmade gifts. But so it goes...

Just a reminder that holiday shipping deadlines are fast approaching, so be sure to get your orders in asap! I am currently shipping all domestic orders via USPS Priority Mail, to ensure holiday arrival. Orders shipped today were due to arrive on Friday, so you still have time! Right now, I am thinking that the official holiday shipping cut off date is Monday the 19th. I will keep you posted if it suddenly changes. As I said above, I have been so focused on getting orders packaged and shipped quickly, that I have had no time to re-stock or focus on new items like I had wished. This coming Saturday, at 9:15am, my husband Mike and I get to see our baby through ultrasound for the very first time! I am currently at 20 weeks, and can't believe we are already half way there! We are getting a gender scan done at Baby Waves, one of the two 3d/4d ultrasound offices in Northeastern Ohio. So not only do we get to see our baby, we finally get to know if we will be welcoming a little boy or girl into our household! I am so excited :)

I have always longed to visit New York City, but have never had the opportunity. Until then, I can dream... and sew!

In other news... KYEbags was interviewed yesterday by Mary Beth of the Akron Beacon Journal! She is doing a write up on Crafty Mart, and chose a couple of the event's participating artists to feature. I am thrilled and honored to be one of those chosen! The article will publish the same day as Crafty Mart- Saturday, November 26th.

Speaking of Crafty Mart, it is only a week away! Things have been a little crazy here, as I prepare for my favorite show of the year. I have been working like mad, but I know it will all be worth it! Between Crafty Mart and the quickly upcoming Thanksgiving holiday festivities, I am feeling slightly overwhelmed. But I am SO looking forward to both, especially good food and family!

The Simple Zipper MINI Side Bag is the newest addition to KYEbags. I have designed it with simplicity and affordability in mind.

The Simple Zipper MINI Side Bag is a basic square shaped bag that can be worn as a shoulder purse or across the body. Strap is adjustable to accommodate all ages and size. Top of bag closes with a 9 inch zipper. Interior of bag has a couple simple storage pockets built into the one side panel, creating a great easy-to-get-to place for storing cell phone, sunglasses, pens, etc. All KYEbags are lined with interfacing for added durability.

The Simple Zipper MINI Owl Bag has a spring green cotton corduroy exterior and interior is made from polka dot print cotton. Front owl applique on front of bag is made from various different fabrics and prints. The owl's eyes are 2 light green plastic buttons. Top zipper is a light mango orange color. Adjustable strap is made from espresso brown cotton twill. Interior pockets are made from polka dot print cotton. All stitching is done with espresso brown and spring green thread.

Okay, so today officially begins the mad dash to prepare for Highland Square's Art in the Square this coming Saturday! This is my favorite show each year, in one of my favorite areas of Akron, and I have been waiting all year for it! Now I can't believe it's finally here. I have so much to prepare and a ton of sewing to accomplish this week.

Art Show Aftermath

Kent's Heritage Festival last Saturday ended up being a success, despite the temper-mental weather. It was a long day (15 hours to be exact), but thanks to my team, Mike(husband) and Emily(sister/model), we had a great time and our booth looked awesome this year! All that hard work setting up the 10 foot tent in my living room last week to experiment with the setup really paid off, and made the setup for Saturday morning go a whole lot smoother. It did rain a bit in the early morning, so we were a bit behind with booth setup as we tried to figure out what to do and if the the clouds would clear up. Our tent is not waterproof, as we found out, and it was the first time ever for a summer festival that I have had to deal with rain. We decided to take the plunge though and hope for the best, and am so glad we did. The clouds certainly did not stop people from coming out to enjoy the festivities! It was great to meet some of my most supportive customers in person, and finally be able to put a face to the recipients of many KYEbags. How rewarding that is and makes it all worth while for me! If you missed out, here are some photos of our booth display. Enjoy!

I have been incredibly busy preparing for Kent, Ohio's Heritage Festival this coming weekend! As promised, there will be lots of special sales and surprises at the KYEbags booth this year that you won't want to miss! And just for fun, I thought I would include my oh-so-popular

"Sweet Potato Burrito" Recipe!
These burritos are easy to make and one of my favorite things to eat. So get yourself an apron and try them out!

Recipe for Kye's Sweet Potato Burritos:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Get a skillet and saute chopped fresh garlic and red onion in butter on low-med heat.

3. While the garlic and onion are cooking, prepare and cook the sweet potato as you would for a baked potato. 1 large sweet potato makes 2 good sized burritos. It should take 2-3 minutes on each side to cook in the microwave. If you prefer to cook your potato in the oven, do so before starting this recipe. Cut the potato in half immediately after cooking to cool.

4. When garlic and onions are nicely browned, add whatever additional veggies you prefer to skillet. (I like to add:1/3 can of corn, sometimes mushrooms, freshly chopped cilantro, and a 1/2 can of black beans) Cook on low heat until beans, etc are heated through. At this time, scoop out the sweet potato from the peel and add to veggie/black bean mix. Mash the potato in the pan a bit with a spoon to help mix it in with the other ingredients. At this time, also add any spices you prefer. I typically add just salt and pepper.

5. Once all ingredients and spices have been added, sprinkle with a cheese of your choice. And let set on a low heat while you prepare the tortillas.

6. Get a cookie sheet out and lay out 2 large size tortilla wraps. I usually use white, but wheat, sun-dried tomato, etc are also good choices.

7. Remove pan from heat and spoon contents onto each wrap evenly.

8. Roll burritos and lay them on the cookie sheet fold side down. If you are unsure how to properly roll a burrito, refer to the back of the tortilla packaging, or click here for easy instructions/illustrations: http://www.wikihow.com/Roll-a-Burrito

9. Place cookie sheet in oven and cook burritos for 10 minutes on each side (20 minutes total), or until golden brown and slightly crispy.

10. Remove from oven, cool for 15 minutes and serve with a side or sour cream, guacamole, or whatever else you prefer. Enjoy!

Note: As I mentioned above, 1 large sweet potato, along with the veggie quantities listed above makes 2 large sized burritos. If you are cooking for a family or larger group, simply double ingredient quantities or experiment with portions until you get the desired amount of burritos needed.

Fun at the Circus Messenger Bag by KYEbags

Messenger bags are a personal favorite of mine because I'm the kind of girl who likes to have her whole life in bag. Its big enough to carry a laptop if needed, yet not so big that it can't be used for everyday use. Many women have even used this bag as a diaper bag!

This messenger bag has a super cute pattern and is a great design for Spring! The outside of this bag is made from an adorable old fashioned circus print. Interior of bag is made from a solid pink heavy weight fabric covered in large yellow, lime green and dark pink polka dots. This bag is lined with interfacing for added durability, and is padded with thick batting, so storing your laptop or other electronics accessories is safe. Interior zipper pocket is pink, as well as the overall stitching on the bag. This bag has a large back pocket, which I like to carry notebooks in. The front pockets, which you can see in the pictures, provide a great storage space for cellphone, pencils/pens, keys, sunglasses, etc.

The straps on my messenger bags are adjustable in order to fit a wide age/size span and accommodate your personal preference in length. The strap can be shortened enough to wear on your shoulder as a purse, or lengthened to wear across your body, which I prefer. (See strap dimensions below.)

The back pocket has a metal snap to close and the top flap also has a snap on either side for closure. (I do not use magnetic snaps on any of my large messenger bags, as they can damage laptops. I simply use metal snaps that are safe for laptop storage.)

The KYEbags tag is located on the front lower corner of the bag for my own personalized touch.

The exterior fabric of this bag is preshrunk and protected with Covgard. Spot clean only.

Bag Body: 15" wide X 16" high

Bag Top Flap: 9.5" long X 11.5" wide

Front Left Pocket: 7.5" wide X 8" high

Front Cell Phone Pocket: 3.5" wide X 5.5" high

Front Pencil/Pen Pockets(2): 1" wide X 5.5" high

Back Pocket: 15" wide X 12" high

Interior Zipper Pocket: 7" wide X 8" deep

Adjustable Strap at its shortest possible length: 32"

Adjustable Strap at its longest possible length: 52"

*My laptop is 14" long X 10" wide X 1" thick and it fits in the bag standing longways upward. Not all laptops have the same dimensions and yours is not guaranteed to fit nicely into this particular bag, especially older models. Please be sure to measure your own laptop before purchasing this bag if you plan to use it to carry your laptop. I do not accept returns!
